My mom's TRUE story Before the Fitness Model Program

My mom, Kathryn Miller, had my brother when she was 27 and me when she was 29. She was one of those women that people asked "You just had a baby?" just a few short months after we were born. However, she was in a horrible marriage, and after she and my father divorced when I was five, things slowly started going downhill.

 

I suppose it had to do with all of the stress she fell under as a single mother. Not only did it take a toll on her psyche, but after a few of years it really started to take a toll on her body. Of course, being so young, I don't recall any of this, but looking back on the pictures now that I'm in my mid-twenties I can really see the difference. She used to be the "hot mom" that all of my friends stared at when she took me to school. I remember one time when she brought me lunch in elementary school. I told one of my friends after lunch that she was my mother, and she said back, "That was your mother?! I thought she was your sister." I was probably in the third or fourth grade.

 

My middle school years are when my mom really started gaining a lot of weight. I'm sure I'm to blame for a big part of this because I wasn't remotely easy to raise. My brother was easier, but needless to say when you're raising two kids in middle school all on your own, you're probably going to gain a couple of pounds.

 

There was a steady gain over the next several years as she passed through her late forties and into her early fifties. I started my degree plan to become a personal trainer at the University of Texas in Austin, so I began trying to help her.

We came up with different diet and fitness programs, but she had gained so much weight she felt helpless and like she couldn't tackle it all, so they all resulted in giving up. I want to clarify this is no small thing. My mother fought through a lot of hardships through her childhood and while raising my brother and I, so the fact that she struggled with weight loss so much really gave me insight to how hard it must be for the people I help as a personal trainer.

Granted, this wasn't the first diet/fitness program she'd seen on Oprah that she called me about. This was just a few months ago, so I'd already finished my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in nutrition and sports science. Just like all the others she'd called about, I told her I would review it and get back to her with my opinion.

 

I don't usually agree with the diet and fitness programs that Oprah recommends on her show (sorry ladies). In my opinion they're usually cracked up to be something "super easy" that "any woman can do in her spare time". Most of them are advertised as something a beginner can master, when really they're intermediate exercises I don't recommend for my clients until several months into their training. Ultimately, these fitness programs usually lead to failure because there's a lot of hype and the customer gets disappointed easily because of the advanced exercises.

 

I started reviewing the Fitness Model Program by Jennifer Nicole Lee and was very skeptical at first. I'm very picky about which programs I will give the "OK" for my mom, and this just seemed like another squeaky-voiced princess that was out to tell women how easy it was to complete these exercises when in reality they were advanced exercises that would ultimately end in my mom feeling defeated by another fitness program.

 

Despite my biased eyes, I read many things about the program that I agreed with and resembled many of the techniques I use to help my clients achieve their fitness goals. I gave it the okay and my mom purchased the Fitness Model Program (this was back when it cost $197). I was confident that it was a good program, but was afraid it was going to be another DVD collecting dust in the closet with the dumbbells, yoga ball, and numerous other fitness programs my mother had purchased in the past.

 

Four weeks later I received a very surprising phone call...

I was going about my business as usual when I received a call from my mom a few months ago. She asked how I was doing, so I caught her up with my life briefly before asking how everything was going with her new fitness program. I could hear her bottled up excitement (I now knew the main reason she was calling) as she told me she'd lost 16 pounds her first month with the Fitness Model Program. Just like any program, you should expect some pretty large losses in the beginning and then a steady decrease just because that's how the human body works. This program didn't plateau near as bad as many of the others I've reviewed in the past, and six months later my mom has lost 67 pounds. She looks fantastic and there's been a very noticeable difference in her attitude towards life and level of happiness.
